Got Questions?
Frequently Asked Questions
Diabetes is a chronic condition where the body cannot properly regulate blood sugar (glucose) levels. This happens either because the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin (Type 1) or because the body doesn't use insulin effectively (Type 2). Over time, uncontrolled blood sugar can damage nerves, kidneys, eyes, and the heart.
Common early signs include frequent urination, excessive thirst, unexplained weight loss, increased hunger, blurry vision, fatigue, slow-healing wounds, and tingling or numbness in the hands or feet. If you notice these symptoms, early testing is highly recommended.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the immune system destroys insulin-producing cells. It typically appears in childhood or early adulthood and requires insulin therapy. Type 2 diabetes develops gradually and is closely linked to lifestyle factors such as diet, weight, and physical activity. It can often be managed through medication, diet, and exercise.
Type 1 diabetes currently has no cure and requires lifelong insulin management. Type 2 diabetes, however, can sometimes go into remission — especially with significant weight loss, dietary changes, and increased physical activity. While not a "cure," achieving normal blood sugar without medication is possible for some patients with early-stage Type 2.
A diabetic-friendly diet focuses on low glycemic index foods, whole grains, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Patients should avoid refined sugars, white rice, fried foods, and sugary beverages. Portion control and meal timing are equally important. Dr. A. Kannan provides customized dietary guidance based on each patient's specific health condition.
The frequency of monitoring depends on the type of diabetes and treatment. Generally, Type 1 patients check 4–10 times daily, while Type 2 patients may check 1–4 times daily. An HbA1c test, which reflects average blood sugar over 3 months, is typically recommended every 3–6 months. Our doctors advise patients on their individual monitoring schedules.
Prolonged high blood sugar can lead to serious complications including diabetic retinopathy (vision problems), nephropathy (kidney damage), neuropathy (nerve damage), cardiovascular disease, and diabetic foot problems. Regular monitoring, medication adherence, and lifestyle changes are key to preventing these complications.
